What is Annapolis MD Known For?

United States Naval Academy
The United States Naval Academy is a prestigious school that educates and trains students to become officers. It is the only college in America solely devoted to training officers for naval service.
The history of the Naval Academy starts with a letter from President George Washington, who was looking for ways to prevent war between France and England on American soil. The letter proposed an academy where young men could be educated in navigation and shipbuilding, so they would have skills necessary for trade or warfare if needed. Congress approved his proposal just days before Christmas in 1794.
The Naval Academy moved here in 1845 and has been there ever since. The original building, called the Rotunda, still stands on the campus today.
The Historic District of Annapolis
This area is a designated National Historic Landmark. It encompasses the colonial heart of the city, including many buildings that are still used by the government today.
The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 and was given its landmark designation in 1971. The boundary was increased in 1978 to include the Naval Academy and State House.
The district is a popular tourist destination, with around one million visitors each year. The most famous building in the district is probably the Maryland State House, which was completed in 1772 and is still used as the state capitol today.

St. John’s College is a small, private liberal arts college. It was founded in 1696 and is the second-oldest college in America (after Harvard).
The school has a unique curriculum that focuses on the Great Books of Western Civilization. The school also does not award academic degrees; instead, students earn certificates when they graduate.
St. John’s also has a strong focus on community service and volunteerism, with students required to complete 60 hours of voluntary work in order to graduate. This is why it was named one of the best colleges for social mobility by The New York Times Magazine in 2016.
The history that comes from Annapolis goes back to the early 18th century. This is a historic city on Maryland’s state capital, and was officially established in 1708 when it became the colonial capital of the Province of Maryland.
